Hackers Already Working On USB Update Exploits

Today, Microsoft has rolled out a planned update that allows the use of USB Flash Drives to be configured as memory storage on the Xbox 360 console; this allows for profiles, gamesaves, downloadable content and even games to be installed on any compatible USB memory device. All Xbox Live users will have to apply the update whether they want this feature or not as it is a mandatory installation.

The update brings the following memory enhancements:

  • You can have 2 devices connected to the console at a time, enabling up to 32GB of simultaneous storage.
  • The system won’t just configure the device once it is connected to the console. You’ll need to head to the memory area in system settings, select your USB Device, and choose from Configure Now (Format and Configure the Full Device), or Customize (you can choose how much memory you want configured for Xbox360 from the free space on the device.)
  • You can now select multiple items to move or copy without needing to transfer each item individually from one device to another.

It has come to the attention of modding groups that once the Xbox 360 associated files are saved on a USB memory device they appear unreadable on any computer, with the folder list displaying itself as empty. Futher investigation by the group has revealed that a folder named XBOX360 is kept hidden, and all Xbox 360 transferred items contained within it are stored together grouped in files that are unable to be individually extracted. With the current USB update, Microsoft has made saved content more difficult to access than previous memory card methods which was to simply insert the card into a device that plugs straight into your computer and copy it across using drag & drop. Folders are now encrypted files, and content transferred to USB memory from the Xbox 360 are stored within the files together rather than listed individually as numbered content.

Within just a few hours of the update, a member of the modding group is already claiming to have hacked the security methods on the files to try and create a program that extracts content to a PC desktop.

Hey all, as soon as the update came out, I was sad to see there was no way to mod, so I have been busy writing C# and have finally made a tool for the job, it is not finished yet but I want to show my progress.

Edit: Having a problem with the Themes and Avatar Items..
Edit2: I just rang my friend up, he is coming over in a min to help me.
Edit3: My friend is here, we are investigating.
Edit4: Ok so.. the Themes are kept in Data0003 and Avatar Items in Data0002.. Wtf?
Oh well we are working on a patch to merge the files together.

Once such a program is made public, anyone with basic computer knowledge can start sharing gamesaves for modification including gamerpics and themes just for starters! In the coming months we could see an increase in scams for MS points or possibly even the resale of gamerpics and themes from the more entrepreneurial of hackers!

Remember to keep your account details safe at all times, and that modifying content could result in account suspension.

Meaningless. These modders had already been doing this with their 360s.

Yeah just means more wannabe modders dont have to buy any cables or mem cards…

Hackers who publicly admit their hacks and mods are the best kind for a company such as Microsoft.
It allows them to monitor the progress and then come up with counter measures. It helps the companies to see the flaws and vulnerabilities and improve their security. It’s better than some one doing it secretively and never announcing the results. This can also help them get jobs for such companies to prevent future hackers.

That was a scam by a guy trying to charge ÂŁ2 for the program which apparently doesnt work

There’s also a few other people working on releasing one, same people who brought ‘profile tool’ I think, including an Avatar Award unlocker

These modders are idiots.

Not only do they hack features but they brag about it.

If MS ever saw this hack(if it’s true) widely exploited they would end up making another dashboard update to remove this USB feature.

It’s because of some idiot hacker that the ability to install linux on the ps3 was removed.
Not only did he hack the ps3 but he bragged about it. It’s this bragging that caused Sony to remove the other OS feature. So anyone who used to used Linux on ps3 has this hacker to blame.

If this USB feature is ever removed from xbox you can blame the hackers for that as well.

All hackers are scum.

It’s about time we can finally make use of cheap USB sticks to store our growing collection of DLC and arcade games! :) Did you get one already?

No one cares if you can mod your profile. Those will be easily detectable by Microsoft for banning. The need to figure out how to inject games or emulators onto the memory cards for playing. Then I would not have a need for the Wii anymore!

What’s the point of having a “compatible” drive if u can’t even use it. Okay I can store games & pics but I can’t access it. If I wanna put madden 2010 on the same unit as gow & move mirrors edge to another memory unit it’s not gonna show up cuz it’s hidden? Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t see the benefit besides more storage.

Well im wondering about the usb port in the back if you get 3 16gb hard drives or sticks then you would have 48gb of space from flash drives. That is a lot of hacks onto the x box. Also why do you care if other people hack games for avatar awards its not like you will never get it and it takes just as much skill to hack it as it does to play a video game. video games are for people who want to pass the time and have fun so people will have fun in different ways, and to the person complaining about liniux on ps3, this is an xbox thread so who cares for it, its a great system but it is not Microsoft so problems will be resolved very differently with hackers thats why you have to pay for live so you are less likely to be tempted to hack an account. Thats all i have to say so it will benifet all

You would come across less like an angry six year old if you could form coherent sentences, employ the correct grammar, punctuation and spelling.

As it is you just come across like you are typing all of that while being rammed in the ass by a big hairy hacker telling you what to type, otherwise you won’t even get a reach-around for your trouble.

Take a pill gimpy.
