Microsoft Make Changes To MS Points Purchasing

Microsoft Points, the currency of the Xbox Live Marketplace, Games for Windows - Live and Zune online stores allow users to purchase content at the click of a button. In North America, Microsoft have changed the way points are sold from their usual incrememts of 500 to better match the pricing of provided Marketplace content.

The Microsoft Points system has been criticised in the past for being deceptive because gamers often needed to purchase more points than what are immediately needed. If downloadable content was released at 800 points you would normally have to buy a block of 1000 points to cover it, but from now due to a recent change you can purchase points in blocks of 400, 800, 1600 or 4000. Currently this allows gamers to purchase the right amount of points for the content required without needing to pay that bit extra to have 100 or 200 left hanging around in your account.

Unfortunately the Microsoft Points Purchasing system has not been changed worldwide and it is unknown if it is ever likely too.

Xboxic will keep you updated.

Hm… Swedish Xbox.com reports nothing unusual. In fact, things are looking as they always have here - same old 500/1000 points intervals, that is.

Mr Andrews - can you and your team please confirm this on your side of the English channel, so to speak? Is this one more of those “US only” deals we are getting used to?

Yeah I mentioned at the bottom, “has not been changed worldwide” Im in the UK and nothing no different for me either - still being ripped off for buying 100 MS Points for every 400 points I actually only need.

It’s hardly getting ripped is it. The points go into a bucket and can be used again in the future. I don’t really see the problem. The points will get used eventually.

It is getting ripped off because the process is to spend more than you need, if something cost a fiver in a shop, you wouldn’t hand over more & tell them to keep it for next time you visited.

For a long time I have thought items on the Marketplace should be able to be bought individually. If something is 400 points, why should we pay for 500.

If you feel ripped off you could alway’s just buy the 1200 point pre-paid card for £10 which works out evenly. This actually works out cheaper than buying straight from microsoft anyway.
