Microsoft bought Lionhead

Microsoft did what they do best and threw around some money. This time they’ve acquired Lionhead, famous for Fable and Black and White. Lionhead is started working on exclusive Xbox 360 content immediately and since Peter Moore already made some comments about a Fable sequel in the past I think we can all safely guess what ‘content’ they’re working on.

Warning; press release mumbo jumbo ahead:

“At Microsoft Game Studios we have worked hard to become the best partner for the best creative talent in our industry, and this acquisition underscores our commitment to excellence,” said Shane Kim, general manager of Microsoft Game Studios. “Peter Molyneux is one of the few true visionaries in our industry, and his joining us is incredibly important to the future of both interactive entertainment and MGS. Lionhead is a shining example of the innovative and creative talent that has delivered some of the most influential and unique games experiences to date, and I am honored to welcome Peter and the incredible people at Lionhead Studios.” “We could not be more excited about being part of MGS. They have long supported our creative vision, and this teamwork resulted in the hugely successful ‘Fable’ franchise,” said Molyneux, managing director of Lionhead Studios. “This acquisition gives Lionhead the stability and opportunity to focus on creating world-class next-generation titles. We are joining some of the most incredible game creators in the industry, the combined talent of which will truly take next-generation gaming to a new level.”

Excellent, you should probably ignore the email I just submitted with the same news then ;)

Out of interest, was there ever a console (Playstation?) version of Black & White, did it get canned? I’m pretty sure it was on the way at one point.

Sorry I’m not reading my mail at the moment, thanks for submitting anyway.

Yeah there was a PSX version of B&W in development at one point, I remember seeing screenshots. DC too I think…

Excellent. Peter Molenyeux is a fantastic games designer and with the stability of MS cash behind him he should be allowed to make some truly great (and original) games.

MS gonna kick Sony’s ass with the PS3 getting more and more franchises, because MS has more money to burn to do so the coming time.

Which is a great thing, the 360 can beat the PS3 so on it’s own terrain and get some really interesting franchises that other consoles won’t get at all!

If MS could snatch Metal Gear Solid creator [Hideo Kojima - I think…] Then yes, they would be screwed. But at this minute, Sony has too much of a big fan base to care about Peter Molyneux.

woot?

Isn’t that what everyone said about Rare?

I really don’t expect much from this marriage. Lionhead’s releases have met with mixed feelings.

I almost bought B&W2 one day but it was $50 and I didn’t really feel like throwing that around. I vote for a 360 version for $40 or $30 with Live, make-your-gods-kill-each-other deathmatch mode!
