LIMBO was released last month to kick-start the five week Xbox LIVE ‘Summer of Arcade’ campaign, and had taken three and a half years to develop. All that hard work has surely paid off, because Playdead Studio’s have confirmed to Gamasutra that the game has been purchased in full by more than 300,000 gamers in less than a month!
About LIMBO, Quoted by Level Designer, Jeppe Carlsen:
“You could call it a learning-by-dying game,” he says. “We wanted the player to die a lot in this game, I think it really works with the theme.”
“Limbo is linear, so you can get really stuck, and there’s no hint system. That’s not really a fortunate situation to put the player in, but we didn’t want to have any in-game menus or anything.”
“The biggest rewards come from finally finding the solution to a puzzle you had to struggle with for some time,… Getting that balance right is really important in making a puzzle game that’s entertaining to play.”
Doing the figures - 300,000 copies purchased in full totals more than 360 Million Microsoft Points spent on the title to date. The total sales income has been calculated at: ÂŁ3,084,000.00 / $5940000.00 before cost of sales expenditure and taxes. Exactly how much of the profit from income is shared between publishers, Microsoft Game Studio’s, and developers, Playdead Studio’s is unknown.
