Dashboard update this Tuesday? [Update]
This Tuesday Xbox Live will be down for several hours, nothing special and we’ve already reported on that. But the reason for the downtime was unknown, until now. One of our commenters, ClayJ, called to get technical support for his 360 and during that call he heard an automated message saying that Xbox Live would be down because of a dashboard update.
Update: Major Nelson debunked this ‘horrible’ rumor in his latest podcast, no Dash update on Tuesday folks, sorry. There will be some cool stuff on Xbox.com after the update, probably E3 related.

Now we already know that background downloading was going to be enabled very soon and that there’s going to be a lot of new content during the E3 so I take it that the update is going to give the marketplace a redesign so that we’ll be able to find all of that new content easier instead of having to dig through hundreds of trailers. We don’t know anything for certain but these things are highly likely to be in the update this Tuesday.
Xbox Live, Xbox.com and the Xbox Live forums will be down from 02:00 until 15:00 Pacific Time. Check this link to find out how those times translate to your timezone
Thanks to gi11is and Jel0man for reporting the Major Nelson bit in the comments.

Will the update be availible Tuesday, or Wednesday?
Because other reports are saying it could be down from 2-24 hours. I think, as a cautionary measure, it’d probably be released overnight to avoid a flooding of the service, though.
Seems to me that Xbox Live will be down to help support a dashboard update. This could me that Xbox Live is being updated Tuesday and the dashboard update could come next week.
The dashboard update could happen Tuesday or Wednesday, but don’t get your hopes too high. It might not be until E3 that we see it.
since when are the pd0 maps up?? does that mean demo??
Expect your xbox360 to be rendered completely useless, thus becoming one of the most expensive paper weights ever produced… Judging by how well the last few updates went anyhow
Did I miss something here? I’ve never had one issue with my 360. Updates and all. What the hell do you people do to your machines to get them all wonky? Shove some KY into the ethernet port thinking it’ll make your downloads go faster?
my xbox has always worked better after a update. used to freeze occasionally but after the last update it barely ever does it. just because ur xbox was bad happened to die afterwards doesnt mean the update did it. all it means is u have bad luck. and if ur logic is true wouldnt everyones have died? im sure the update only effected a few of the exact same console. no offense but its the hardware not the software.
Check out this clip of Aries… Mr. “No Fun” himself! LOL

Hmmm…. Aries, First off, my xbox didn’t die, I was simply making a little “joke” regarding the update problems in the past… and the converse of what you just said: just because your XBOX did NOT f*ck up after an update, doesn’t mean you are now speaking for the majority. Maybe you just got lucky, and dodged the bullet… If your logic is true, wouldn’t everyone have survived the last few updates unscathed? try to lighten up a bit, I doubt my comment has caused you any inconvenience… Freedom of speech anyone!?? Here are a few links regarding my “bad luck” … not the software eh?

!LOL! Now THAT’s FUNNY!
I read a lot about the UPDATE glitches over the past couple months… It definitely goes to show that it is impossobile for MS to predict the impact an update will have on everyone. each person uses their console in different ways. Many of us use the media center extender features, others choose to download a ton of contend from the XLM, and others just straight up game.
well seems like everytime curry or major nelson or any of these bloggers annuonce some cool news to better the 360 u guys come and start saying yeah but u cant find one or u but itll destroy half. its getting old. we get it. u guys are unhappy with the machine. nuff said u people made ur point 3 months ago.
Major Nelson says no dashboard update Tuesday. He said Tuesday is just an update to xbox.com and xbox live
Where does he say “no dashboard update”? Or is it that he just doesn’t mention a dashboard update? Either way, the announcement when you call Xbox Live tech support specifically mentions an update.
Major Nelson says so in his podcast. He says there’ll be some new stuff on xbox.com to check out but no dashboard update.
Well, foo. Seems like someone over there at Microsoft oughta tell the Xbox Live folks to change their automated announcement.
We’ll have to wait…
Listen to the podcast. Major talks about it from the 37th minute^^.
Dont suppose this updates addresses any recent dvd-rom firmware advancements?? hmmmm
Hrm. Major Nelson may call this a ‘horrible’ rumor, but the information came from an automated announcement played on the Xbox Live technical support phone line. It’s not like anyone just made this up; the source of the information was Microsoft itself. Sounds like there’s a communication problem over there about what is and what is not going to happen on Tuesday.
THE HOTLINE GOT HACKED! LOL! They must be using WINDOWS XP firewall on their call manager server!!
What they say when you call:
“In preparation for the launch live spring auto update, there’ll be a breif interruption of the xbox live service. …and may last for up to 24 hours.”
So they clearly say “auto update”, which we all know equals an update to the box itself, which is quite amusing after having heard Major Nelson say that it’s got nothing to do with a “dashboard upgrade”.
I called the support and asked them what the update is all about. The support agent didn’t really know, so he put me on hold and was going to ask a colleague. This is what he finally had to say; “We don’t know exactly why it’s going to be down, just that it’ll be down for maintenance, but we don’t know exactly why.”
So you get one kind of information from the automatic message when you call the support line, one information (or none, depends how you put it) when you speak to an agent, and one kind of information from Major Nelson.
Sounds exciting, doesn’t it?
I’m disconnecting my ethernet cable FOREVER!
where is that pic from?
