E3 2006: Gears of War

Gears of War was already announced a while ago, but yesterday Epic’s Cliff Blezinski demoed the game in front of a big audience at the E3 during Microsoft’s press conference. The crowd was very enthousiastic about the amazing graphics and the very slick looking gameplay. They also released a couple of nice screenshots acompanied by a press release explaining some of the features.

“Gears of War” is the first game developed by Epic Games exclusively for Microsoft Game Studios and the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system. “Gears of War” thrusts gamers into a deep and harrowing story of humankind’s epic battle for survival against the Locust Horde, a nightmarish race of creatures that surface from the bowels of the planet.

In this third-person tactical action/horror game, players live and breathe the role of Marcus Fenix. A disgraced former war hero, Marcus seeks personal redemption as he leads his fire team against an onslaught of merciless warrior fiends. Gamers immerse themselves in an experience so intensely emotional and gut-wrenching that playing will be like controlling a blockbuster action movie.

“Gears of War” utilizes the breathtaking new Unreal Engine 3 to create cinematic, high-definition visuals for a gaming experience that truly ushers in the next generation. Gamers will experience beautifully rendered interactive environments and characters so lifelike they appear to be made of flesh and bone. The next-generation visuals create a world in which the tiniest detail is vivid in the largest battle.

“Gears of War” unites next-generation technology with classic, emotional storytelling and a revolutionary tactical combat system, engrossing the gamer in a horrifying epic story of war and survival.

Features:

  • Engaging and disturbing cinematic story. Massively scoped worlds, memorable characters and an epic story line play out like an intense and unsettling blockbuster action film. Dramatic in-game camera work and a compelling story bring the brutal, emotionally charged experience to life. Gamers control Marcus Fenix and his fire team as they pit advanced human technology against the overwhelming and horrific Locust Horde.
  • Fire team co-op action. All game modes, levels and scenarios are designed for cooperative fire team play (AI or human). For the first time, AI teammates are indiscernible from human players. They move intelligently, take orders effectively, and seek cover and defend themselves when necessary. Gamers will experience richer cooperative gameplay than ever, through unique characters that require cooperation to survive.
  • Unprecedented visuals in next-generation gaming. “Gears of War” ushers in the next generation with unprecedented visuals. The Unreal Engine 3 technology pushes high-definition visual designs and brings out the smallest details in the largest battle. Gamers will experience a rich dynamic world with an unprecedented level of detail. Characters come to life with unbelievable model quality and a physics-integrated animation system that has them truly reacting intelligently to events as they unfold around them.
  • Hyper-realistic and intense combat. In “Gears of War” the battlefield is a lethal place — to foolishly stand out in the open is to die. To survive, gamers can create and take cover using interactive and dynamic environments, suppress the enemy with blindfire, and use their weapons and teammates to outwit and outfight their terrifying enemies.
  • Next-generation Xbox Live action. “Gears of War” will embody the next-generation Microsoft® Xbox Live™ experience and extend it even further. Gamers will be able to experience individualized matchmaking, view player statistics, earn player achievements, customize their games, and build and personalize their gamer profiles.

The game is still set for a release somewhere in Q4 2006. We at Xboxic are all anxiously awaiting this release since we had such a great time with GRAW Co-op.

OMG this game is a killerapp for the 360, definitely a system seller for sure.

It’s like the pre-rendered stuff from Sony for let’s say Killzone 2 but then in Real Time and playable ;)

Oh man what got Sony their asses whooped like hell this E3. Their presentation was weak, the only thing I saw where a bunch of not really strong shooters, and ofcourse GT4. But I must say they shouldn’t bitch at PGR3 anymore because GT4 wasn’t really special in my eyes. Not to forget Forza 2 is on the way.

And all these trailers, demo’s and games that are thrown by MS this year 160 by holiday season, and how many will PS3 have ready by then gnegne. And most important: how many good no PS2 rippoffs but real next gen games will there be by Sony?

I laugh my butt off for half the money and a great 360 instead of that piece of overanticipated hardware costs

I must say the Wii got a bit of my attention also. And for the price of a full PS3 I’ll have the 360 (I own already) and a Wii for about the same investment :)

GOW is gonna be sick… It’s going to have online co-op which is HUGE, and I’d say that it is the best looking game to date. I am afraid that the MGS4 trailer was pretty dramatic though. SONY did grab some people’s attention with that one, I’m not gonna be a total MS fanboy and take that away from them… But… As far as I’m concerned, it was just a movie… and I like to PLAY my games

are you sure it’s XBL co-op? i just saw co-op and no mention of online co-op in the article above. i would think that they’d be pretty sure their audience knows that co-op is online by saying it blatantly

there is co-op if u don’t have that game(who doesn’t) its fun online co-op but a little bit more challengeing if the guy u play wit suks

GOW is one of the best shooters to date. The graphics are amazing as you are immersed quickly into battle with many dangerous foes. This game has surprisingly surpassed the greatness that we have put onto “Halo 2″. This is the new generation of shooter where blindfire is needed but not over used and where co-op is avaible online and offline, so that you can harness your abilities with a close friend or even with a complete stranger. The $59.99 is worth it for this game because of a lot of replay value.
