Major update for Dashboard and games “out soon”; webcam on the way

An inside source at Microsoft informed us that Microsoft is currently finishing off one huge update for the Xbox 360 that is going to put an end to all the common problems in both games and the system itself. It will contain fixes for all currently known lockups in games, missing or impossible to get achievements and a bunch of new functionality in the Dashboard.

The update package will be released as soon as possible via a central dashboard update. The webcam accessory is going to be released simultaneously or slightly after, because one of the Dashboard modifications is going to be camera support. Whether background downloading is another is not known yet.

All information above is subject to change until official confirmation. We will be keeping you informed of any updates ofcourse.

Update: Xbox MVP and forum moderator Shreddies more or less confirms the information for all you skeptics out there.

Another update: [H]ard|OCP’s man on the inside also confirmed the information, and even added that “an auto-update is imminent.”

Oh sweet! I can’t wait to finally be able to get 200 in outpost kaloki x!

i can almost guarantee that they will not make downloading things easier.

until such time as bigger hdds are made available you’ll have to keep buying 100+$ 12 gig harddrives. when you can get a 250 gig external one for 80$… i wouldn’t call you an idiot for buying the MS brand hdd.. not to your face anyway.

[…] Xboxic reports that a source at Microsoft has clued them in to a major update that is soon to be delivered to Xbox Live that will include bug fixes, improvements, and support for a new webcam accesssory. The update will fix known bugs in the system that cause game lockups, alter currently impossible achievments, and add newfunctionality to the Dashboard. The webcam accessory should hit stores immediately or soon after. […]

I just hope this fixes the gauntlet no achievment thingy cus i cannot get the last 4 achievments. And I wonder what the new updates to the dashboard are “:looks at pants and sees LUMP” oh yEAH>

all that is fine but what most of the people on my friend list want is to be able to talk to each other like the old xbox. also we want to be able to talk to friends on the old xbox. it kinda sux that they split us up… for me the best thing they can do is the chat feature- weather its like a chat channel like ull find in pdz or any other 360 game… i mean come on we all love the fact that u can shoot the breeze in the dash for a few to “rib” each other before gettin on some sof or gr2ss…

Comment by grimey on 2006-01-20 16:22:45 | Reply

3 big things they need to fix on the 360 ….

1- fix the dash so we can chat to everyone we been playing with for years remember not everyone could afford let alone find a 360 even now so we would really like to talk to all are friends.

2- four chat what is that… lets say i have a chat open i have to put one friend on hold to chat to one other then someone send me a chat and now im in the 3rd chat room. instead of goin through all that why dont u guy just have it like the old dash chat were u can have a big group of your friends in one room or a chat channel that we can open and invite anyone into not.

3-if your gonna take from halo 2 matchmaking do it right it is so hard to get 2 or more people in call of duty … the matchmaking dont work … i would gladly give that up for the option to MAKE MY OWN ROOM what happen to the privite room so we can work on clan stuff …..

Regarding pt 3: Infinity Ward has already confirmed they are working on a CoD2 patch to solve at least the idiotic lag issues, but I suspect they will also expand lobby options. Unclear whether that patch will be also be in this central update though.

Xbox 360 itself has no problems with good matchmaking and lobbies, have a look at Perfect Dark Zero to see how CoD2 should have been.

Like 360 users have a choice. You can’t save to an external drive, so what’s the current alternative? Is every non-idiot hacking-up their 360 somehow?

There are cheaper alternatives to gasoline too… and yet there are so many idiots out their putting unleaded gas in their cars. Oh wait, that’s the only thing their car will use… idiots…

Where exactly can you get a 250gb external hard drive for $80? The cheapest I’ve seen was an 80gb external for $80.

i saw a 150 gig external harddrive on buy.com i think but it was one of those 4th of july or thanksgiven sales… their out there but u have to look..yea i might have been wrong on the 3rd one earlier my bad .. but what about the 1st two those were the feature that made live great..i really thnk they forgot about that.. even if they make it up to 10 in a chat room do it ..

Um hello, the hard drive in the 360 is a notebook HDD, even though it is still overpriced a 60GB retail is about $120, thats not external. Stop comparing desktop drives to laptop ones.

And I just had to send my 360 in with the hard drive, I had the same issues as you peave.

i think it’s great that microsoft is trying to solve these common issues among their thousands of muffed up 360s. what i’m really tired of and irritated by is the lack of effort put into posting a comment on blogs similar to this. those of you out there that are unable to spell properly and have no grasp of the english language, consider reading a book or practicing your writing skills instead of wasting all your time with video games. it’s great that you’re so passionate about a piece of entertainment hardware, but you’re not going to ammount to jack squat if you can’t communicate without sounding like an idiot.

Wow.

Before you start talking about how the hard drive is overpriced, try and find a 20 gig 2.5″ SATA drive in an external enclosure that is self powered, then come back to me. Best you will find comes to about 80-90 bucks, and doesn’t look near as sexy as the 360 one.

Yeah, Dover, I’d rather read a post with poor grammar on the relevant topic than read an English lesson in a video game forum. Are you really recommending to a bunch of gamers, in a video game forum, that we ‘consider reading a book or practicing [our] writing skills instead of wasting all [our] time with video games.’ Dude, go post on a MLA style guide blog or something.

Don’t forget the issue with too dark screens. Microsoft needs to put full gamma functionality (like Nvidia and Ati cards) into the dashboards with different pre-sets for CRTs, LCDs, Plasma, e.t.c

Comment by Davis on 2006-01-27 10:43:51 | Reply

Here’s a list of things I (an anonymous professional reviewer) think Microsoft should address in dashboard:
1. background downloading

2. While playing a game, being able to control the volume of mp3’s being played without having to change the volume of everything.

3. being able to scroll page down when going through music albums/ artists etc. (especially with the remote)

4. Freedom to organize mp3’s. (i.e. creating numerous playlists easily)

5. more types of mp3 visualizations to choose from that aren’t quite so spastic

6. being able to fast-forward music/ HD videos

7. mp3’s playing in the background remaining on despite accessing videos, games, ripping cd’s, etc.

If they can fix all the bugs, it could mean that they update bios and lower voltage of the CPU or GPU. Are they really going to lower clock frequenzies?

Why on earth would they lower frequencies?

Comment by Peter on 2006-01-29 18:21:02 | Reply

Lowering voltage should make the system more stable and it won’t crash so easily. Also if there are some overheating problems it should affect that too. It makes sense and it’s quite logical, but MS can’t be so stupid to make that.

I think its oke that they say there is going to be a mojor update.
So if the bugs enso are solved theyre going to add webcam software.
If i am correct. IF that happens i just hope that it wont bring more bugs into your system. Personaly i think webcam on a console is useles. If you can chat while gaming without being diconected from live in some games that would be an improvement. + the already long promised update for cal of duty2 if they would solve that first. If somoane can explain why a webcam is useful on a console please do so.

Well, dont forget that 360 is an entertainment system, not just a gaming console…It would be nice if me and my friend have webcams and see each other during a Call Of Duty 2 deathmatch. That could be great!

IMO they must fix the chat room so lot of people can chat together, but i think this is just a “restriction” from Microsoft so you got to buy games and speak with your friends in lobby before the live game starts…This is the only logical explanation to this!(dont forget that in xbox1 that was possible).

There is a glitch for CoD2 so you can host games, select any map you want, time limit, frags limit etc.

A message board post over at the official Xbox.com forums is supposedly a leak of the features that will be included in the upcoming autumn firmware update for the Xbox 360.

If genuine, some of the most significant improvements to the system include compatibility with third-party wireless controllers, IPTV functionality, and new “advertising opportunities” in gameplay. The latter infers that the kind of dynamic product placement that has so far been seen in a limited capacity could potentially become a lot more widespread.

Other improvements include: the option to animate themes as well as accompany them with music; a “time estimated” bar to show gamers how long any particular download is expected to take; and enabling the use of both the Messenger pad and the Xvid open source multimedia format.

Most of the additions to the Xbox 360 detailed above seem plausible enough, except perhaps for the Xvid functionality. GamerSquad just isn’t sure Microsoft would want that on its system at the risk of making downloadable movies on Xbox Live obsolete.

Full list of rumoured firmware upgrades:

* Compatibility with third-party wireless controllers
* Compatibility with messenger pad
* Xbox Live Vision firmware upgrade, sharper image filtering
* Many more Vision Cam settings
* New screensaver settings - when away from Xbox 360, screensaver will play for optional time, before screen goes dark
* New Xbox Live Arcade blade - where you can download, play and learn about Xbox Live Arcade
* Brand new “web based adver-games” flash games which aren’t downloaded, but are playable bite sized games, accessed via new Xbox Live Arcade Blade
* New Screensaver option in Themes and Gamer Pics option in Marketplace Blade
* New functionality with Messenger, works with chatpad
* New XNA Game Launcher for those that have the program, new options
* New language, time and date settings
* New “advertising opportunities” in gameplay
* Xvid support
* New “favourites” option via Xbox Live Arcade, can rate according to preference
* IPTV Functionality - support for TiVo like PVR options. Will be able to record TV direct. Options include source by channel, director, actor and distributor
* Filter friends list, will be able to filter friends via games
* New clan support - will be able to launch clan games direct from dashboard, can “fold” friends into new clan category in friends list
* Better translations in settings and other options for Japanese,
* German and Spanish languages
* New quick option to delete via X Button in memory viewer.
* Option for having downloadable In-game content not inform when completed download
* Option for having video content not inform when completed download
* Faster settings for viewing unfinished video content downloads
* New option in Games tab - beta and others, will be launcher for MMO and multiplayer betas
* New option in Marketplace Games tab, search by letter, can be inputted via text pad or console
* Smarter game settings - you can be messaged via publishers about new in-game content for your games
* Picture in picture functionality for DVD Drive and some other updated settings
* Improved USB Keyboard settings
* Improved voice chat settings in game and from dashboard
* Faster response times to Redeem Code settings
* Option to play a Redeemed Code game straight after redeeming code
* Console will now recognise low Hard Drive space, will inform you immediately if can’t download current item, will automatically download next available that is able.
* Increased space size for gamerpics and dashboard themes
* Themes can now be animated
* Themes may now have sound effects
* Better slideshow capabilities, new options added. New sound effects and integration with Hard Drive/ PC music capable
* New estimated timer for downloads, informing how long download will expect to takes.
