Xbox Dashboard Update confirmed, again [update]
Our German friends over at Xbox Archiv informed us about the rumored dashboard update. They got confirmation from Boris Schneider (Senior Product Manager Xbox Platform and Accessories, Microsoft Germany) that the dashboard update is coming at the end of May. Features include background downloading and having multiple downloads at once.
We got confirmation from Boris Schneider-Johne (Senior Product Manager Xbox Platform and Accessories, Microsoft Germany) that a huge Dashboard Update will arrive at the end of may! It will feature a download manager for 6 parallel downloads in the background. He also mentions that there will be a lot more features in there but it will be a surprise and he won’t talk about
it! The downloads will also running while a game is played.

The update will feature more then background downloading, so what will Microsoft brings to us? A totaly overhauled marketplace? We will see at the end of may.
Thanks to Erzengel360 from Xbox Archiv for reporting this news.
[UPDATE]
Xbox Archiv just recieved some more info:
The user marks a file to download and it will be put in an active queue
downloadlist. There are 6 slots reserved in that queue. They will be
downladed sequentially not in parallel! If the Xbox360 sees there is
bandwith available it will boost the download speed up, if there. During
Online Sessions the downloads will be paused to garantee no lags. It’s also
possible to turn off the console, after powering it back on the downloads
will resume. When a download finishes the user will get a message that it
has been downloaded. The bandwidth managmend looks like to be for lag free chats in the dashboard
or some other features which will be implemented additionally, i think so
cause during online sessions it will be paused anyway as he mentions in his
response to my questions.

Thank god for that. It drives me mad when im downloading and i get a message.
Finally!
Maybe we’ll finally get custom gamerpic support!
no.. only when the 360 cam is comming you can use your own head in it
which head?
Haha. The hairy one.
hope there is a RSS reader in it.. and i hope that the language problem is solved in Belgium (we speak dutch, have a english dashboard but everything on the marketplace is french, dubbed french trailers, french banners etc)
I don’t even get banners.
I’d rather see banner I can’t read than nothing.
check your settings.. its because of the -18 year settings
Except I’m 19. And what settings are you talking about? I’ve done everything from changing my birthday on my hotmail account to make me 25 years old … to accepting 1st and 3rd party info from my 360.
So again, where can I find these settings?
WOOHOO!
IF these rumours are true, it’ll be a nice update indeed. Both download in the background and multiple downloads would be nice.
The overhauled marketplace have been mentioned by Major Nelson before. They now it needs reworking now that the marketplace grows in size.
Both the background downloads and a redesign of the marketplace is mentioned in Major Nelsons presentation: http://video.google.com/v...255732&q=major+nelson
Haha nice kameo by our own Curry.
To clear things up. He said “if all goes well the update will arive at the end of may”. So expect the update around that time. He also said this has been postet in a press release also, but it’s very diffucult to find it in there. I haven’t found it yet but you can be sure it’s not a rumor cause it’s from Microsoft directly. 100%. I really would like to know what these other features will be and whats up with the downloads. Are they running in the background while playing multiplayer (bandwidth?) or only while playing offline games? We will see.
I’d be happy with multiple downloads in the background and just be able to browse the dashboard.
Being able to play some arcade games would be nice.
Playing “normal” games seems a bit far fetched, with regards to resources, i.e. CPU cycles and bandwidth.
a better music and photos structure is needed when using media connect to a PC … it’s just unusable if your photo/music collection is large
multiple downloads, AND able to play games at the same time? Beautiful. As long as it doesn’t impact on multiplayer speeds (i.e. online play not possible while download in progress).
Saying that, there’s nothing stopping people with a shared connection from downloading on their PC while they use their Xbox, so maybe it’s not a high priority feature for MS.

Just downloading multiple things would be nice… that way you can just let it run for a while and come back to a bunch of trailers and demos. multiple DLs and play XBLA, would be really nice
And queuing!
Awesome!!!
I hope they add a built in ‘Dominoes Pizza’ menu, then I really never would need to get up! >_
Haha, another blade for all the delivery places in your area. You call them up and “voice chat” with them. Yeah, that would be nice…
It would have been nice to have this before all the E3 trailers/demos.
But then, I couldn’t even imagine how slow it would have been. So perhaps it is best it’s not possible to download 6 things at a time yet.
/cancelled out own post
I just read his Blog on www.dreisechzig.net and will translate another post for you which he made to clarify things (for people who are not german
) :
You won´t be able to have 6 downloads at the same time, but you can have up to 6 in a queue after you marked them, and they will be downloaded one by one. The download will automatically pause during Online Gaming to prevent laggy games. When you turn off the 360, the download will proceed immediately when you turn it on again.
He calls the update a “relatively big Online Update” and mentions some other functionality enhancements, so I´m very excited about it.
Oooh, this is almost better than the article we’re commenting on! Great info, dude!
That makes more sense, cheers for the update.
No problem
But the original news should be corrected, as it still says “6 parallel downloads”.
Haha thanks, we got the translation from Erzengel himself (thanks pal) who is the author of the original article and I dont speak German so I missed that.
at long last PODGE was beginning to think this would never happen.
We’re all gonna need bigger Hard drives soon.
Funny you should say that. I’m at under 1GB right now. I’ll just buy an external USB hard drive. I dunno, 80GB?
Only thing you can put on a ext drive is mp3s and picts… you can’t copy over any trailers/demos/xbla, I’ve tried it.
Well, I know that. But thanks. And that’s what I’d use it for is music. Because on my 360’s hard drive are 1000 songs. So that would clear up at least 3GB for me, plus I could actually put ALL the music I want, instead of just the songs I REALLY want.
finally!!!!
i hope it’s not gonna get delayed!!
Is that “two new maps” thing a joke on the perfect dark bit?
I sent the updated info from him some time ago to xboxic, okay heres the updaten info as mentioned above:
The user marks a file to download and it will be put in an active queue downloadlist. There are 6 slots reserved in that queue. They will be downladed sequentially not in parallel (he corrected that staement)! If the Xbox360 sees there is bandwith available it will boost the download speed up. During online sessions the downloads will be paused to guarantee no lags. It’s also possible to turn off the console, after powering it back on the downloads will resume. When a download finishes the user will get a message that it has been downloaded.
considerations by myself:
The bandwidth managmend looks like to be for lag free chats in the dashboard or some other features which will be implemented additionally, i think so cause during online sessions it will be paused anyway as he mentions in his response to my questions.
thx for the update
So if you’re chatting, the download will stop?
I don’t think so. I think it will download a bit slower while chatting. In online gameplay it will stop completely though.
6 slots should be more than enough. Granted, during E3, I download like 30 things. In the past, I’ve never wanted to download more than 6 things at once.
I’d really like to see more functionality with regards to video playback. It’s ridiculous that they require you to have a media Center PC and only support MS formats. I want to browse to my xvids and divx movies and watch them w/o dragging a computer’s performance down…
Ditto… mac to 360 would be nice too, or allowing connect360 to make it happen for them.
I would really like to see them allow up to 4 people to be in a private group chat.. I can’t believe that they can’t figure a way to partition the available bandwidth to allow for more than one on one.. To me, this is even more annoying than not being able to do something while its downloading.
If the original Xbox can have 16-person chats, why the hell can’t the 360 have just 4?! That’s all we really need.
I hope a large CHEAP Hd come soon
Will be great to be able to play gsmes while downloading demos or trailers. Maybe they will add a web browser, don’t know why they haven’t done this yet as the Dreamcast has been the only console to have one.
a web browser would be very nice, just give me text and pics and the ability to log in and do stuff on different websites. i dont need flash or any of that complicated stuff.
i could see a web browser soon, when firefox/mozilla takes even more of IE’s market.
Woohoo yay.
so does this mean you can d/l and do something else whilst it d/ls? cos thats awesome
A web browser would be great too.:)
Got an email that this information was leaked by a mistake of the product manager mentioned above. He got some trouble over there @E3. Because of this, I removed the article on my site until Microsoft “really” officially anounces it.
It was wish by him to remove it. So stay tuned until end of may.
article up again, cause it is posted everywhere else.
[…] One of the features so many users have been wanting appears to be on the way. The people at Xboxic have received information that background downloads are on the way. The way they phrase it is that the user will be able to queue up to 6 downloads that will be downloaded sequentially (not in parallel). It is also rumored that this update will include more features but no hint as to what those might be have surfaced. Only time will tell what else Microsoft has planned for LIVE and Marketplace.
