Is Sony’s free online service just a cheap XBL Silver ripoff?
Nice catch by Major Nelson: during their E3 presentation the Sony guys had a whole presentation about the PS3 online service, which is reputedly going to be entirely free. Funnily enough, the feature list shows a lot of things we know and love from Xbox Live Silver, and omits mentioning online play and matchmaking. So erm, they’re hyping that they are going to give you a blatant copy of free Xbox Live Silver for free, and probably will charge extra for the online gameplay services I suppose?
Watch the video for yourself here. Why do I just wish Sony would for once be honest about their claims? Just bloody admit guys that you’re jealous of Xbox Live’s success and want to copy it, you’re not making friends with your loyal fanbase if you keep lying to them mmmkay?

This was being talked about 5 minutes after the Sony press conference. They have a page full of bullet points for things about their free online service. Multiplayer gaming was not listed.
I have seen on IGN.com that Sony will have a free multiplayer service. They will control the frontend and the game developers must have servers for their own games. Kind of like what EA does on Xbox Live now. So, this opens the possibility for each game developer to charge. Not that EA charges for Xbox games now.
We’ll have to see what happens.
Curry: Lol fanboy!
(j/k)
It wont be too long before the PS3 will be able to do time travel…
Th3y c0u1d r3411y u53 that feature(time travel)… so they can bring all of the completed consoles back from 2007, and launch them in November like they had wished… PWNZEDXORZ! I’m still buying a PS3…
To sell on ebay
seven-dimensional time travel at that!
before i switched to m$ and the 360 i had a ps2 and the online service itself was free but to play games like ncaa football and battlfield and killzone they charged you like $3. i personally dont think anybody can beat xbox live with all that it offers
hype hype hypity hype hype.. Any self consious logic person should know better before actually beleiving all the crap Sony says to have a few thousands more pre orders.. I really believe Sony is afraid of the 360 it sees it as a true rival now not as a newcomer with no luck(like the original Xbox)
I wouldn’t say the original Xbox had no luck. It came in and knocked Nintendo’s boat pretty hard.
One cost, to one group, rather than lots of smaller ones to lots of different people, just makes sence to me. Xbox live is better for that reason.
Oh, and Hoffer, EA doesnt use their own servers for the “basic” xbox live stuff… they use their own servers (as does a number of other developers) for EXTRA features, like in Burnout for rivals, and PRG3 with Gotham TV. And I dont think they could get away with charging for thouse features (as in, no one, or not many, would pay).
Are you talking about the same EA? I thought their mission was to rob everyone of their money.
Does anyone remember when sony said that Playstation could render Toy Stoy? I cant help but think about the lie’s they have dished out over the years
Yes I remember that whole Toy Story like graphics thing. Anyone remember when they said the PS1 would play movies?
I wouldn’t start all this “toy-story/emotion engine” thing. Some members of the forums got rather angry.
Don’t forget that MS said the Xbox can render Toy Story 2 graphics. That didn’t seem to happen.
This is great! My friend keeps using “free online” as his reason for chosing PS3 over 360. Can’t wait to burst his bubble.
If you ask me, this is a pretty good thing. Yeah, I know its blatant rip-off, but when MS notice’s what is going on, they’re going to want to “better” Sony’s online, so they will make LIVE “better.”
Which, if we are to believe this, should be any day now.
Can you believe the yahoos’ over at Michelin tire co.? I mean, they made the exact same product as Good Year… and they expect it to sell /rofl.
This site should be renamed. Fanboi.com. By fanbois, for fanbois.
Sony has lacked a real online network for all of their systems. Xbox has an established, proven system that works very well. MMO’s work very well. W/ this in mind, Sony would w/o a doubt have some sort of *pay* network system lined up for their next gen hardware.
Obviously a free component is required as well. Games like Final Fantasy XI which operate on their own monthly fee should not require a paid subscription to an intermediate network. Does this make sense to anyone?
Companies compete. Companies take advantage of what the market wants. And the market wants Playstation (because it’s superior in all but online play) to have the same online capabilities as Xbox. Hell, we want better. And I’m positive we’ll get it.
“And the market wants Playstation (because it’s superior in all but online play)” [Quoted from above.] (I don’t know how to do quotes in the comments)
Explain…? How is it “superior” in every way?
“This site should be renamed. Fanboi.com. By fanbois, for fanbois.”
Oh, and your not a Sony fanboy?
You sound more like a fanboy than anyone on this site, saying Sony is “superior in all but online play,” that is a matter of opinion and quite frankly, not an opinion with much evidence to back it up. And your analogy with the tire companies does not apply here. Sure, they make tire just like the other company, but the tread on them is not a carbon copy of the other with a different name slapped on it. When a company blatantly copies another’s idea, adds nothing and changes nothing but the name, that’s not competition, it’s stealing.
If you don’t like the site, why do you keep coming back? You’re more than welcome to discuss whatever you want with the rest of us here or on the forum, but I just wonder why you keep returning if this is apparently your honest opinion.
The rest of the visitors seem to appreciate our way of bringing Xbox news, so don’t expect us to change our style anywhere soon.
Does anyone else think that the Sony fanboy defenders sound like insecure, teenage boys?
And before you call me a fan boy, I weighed the features of both the PS2 and the XBox and chose the XBox for superior capabilities (graphics, networking, etc). My choice for the XBox 360 was due to availability & features.
Well with the new Xbox Live Anywhere thing, I think Microsoft are onto another winner here.
For me personally, i think live anywhere is useless. i only play games a lot on consoles, the only game on my phone is breakout, and i really am not that worried when my friends are online. and the pc vs xbox thing?? dumbest idea, mouse is faster than the xbox controller. i hope shadowrun is the only game to do that and nobody else.
Huxlet is another game that’ll mix the PC and Xbox360 platforms.
Huxley, actually. lol
sony are followers not inovators and proves with their controller and online service they are playing catch up
i owned all last gen consoles and i dont see sony denting their market europe/usa wise but japan they will
Look again. Major Nelson has put up a new comment.
