Xbox 360 controller beats the keyboard
According to Bill Gross, a FASA Software Test Engineer working on Shadowrun, the controller will beat the mouse and keyboard in the near future. Shadowrun is the first game that enables crossplatform multiplayer gaming with the upcoming Windows Vista. After some testing it turned out that PC gamers lost to their controller enemies contradictory to what most gamers would expect.
Gross said that some people will always say the keyboard and mouse will be better but Shadowrun has proven the opposite. To balance they game they started to tweak the PC version, small modifications in magnetism and auto-aim, and also adjusting some settings on the Xbox 360 version. After some time it became balanced, the FASA testing team plays every day, and no one is winning more than others.
However initially the PC version players were better at aiming at large distances, probably because of the lack of fast precision with a controller, but at close combat the controller had a slight advantage. In the end one system will probably have an advantage over the other depending on the level size.

Finally Gross also said something intersting about the screen resolution. With not everybody having a nice 32″ HDTV the difference in resolution is something that has to be taken into acount. PC users will have an advantage over SDTV users in terms of sharpness. Luckily, the difference doesn’t seem to impact how well you play, and doesn’t award an advantage to either system.

Give me keyboard and mouse any day, nothing can ever match it in terms of accuracy.
I guess the only downside with keyboards is that the action buttons are generally not as “at your fingertips” as they are on a controller, hence the controller probably has a slightly faster reaction time.
I find movement (i.e. strafing) in FPS easier with a controller, but precision aiming is easier with a mouse.
It won’t matter in the end (as stated above) because both will have advantages and disadvantages.
Also, most controller games have a passive “aiming helper” that unwittingly guide the crosshairs towards your enemy. Little known fact, even Halo has it.
Indeed. And the “aiming helper” is sort of sticky in Halo, which can be annoying when your reticle tracks someone passing your field of view rather than staying on the person you are shooting.
Well most pc gamers today use gamediviceses like Nostromo etc. So then you do have the keys at your fingertips!
I’m not “most PC gamers” - I haven’t actually played a PC FPS since Unreal Tournament 2
no way, this is BS
Quick, stop the thread! it’s pointless to continue discussing, “Nick” calls BS.

A game that is properly developed for a console can play fine with a controller, especially ‘arcade’ shooters like PDZ and COD2 play just fine. After some getting used to, you won’t miss the keyboard and mouse at all really.
I doubt this is true myself… maybe if the console version is tweaked to have auto aim, sure…
I just know i’ve seen people play the same fps game with a gamepad on a pc, and get OWNED by someone using a keyboard and mouse. Explain that ubi?
they balanced this game, unlike pc only games that are only supposed to be played w/ a mouse.
Dear Shadowrun team:
I want to have your babies.
Love,
the Internet’s Doug the Aquacell Guy
you whore!!
Talk all they want… I doubt this will hold true once a cross platform game actually hits market. Sorry, but even in close combat I’ll kick ass with Mouse and a Nostromo.
Keyboards due suck, but a mouse will more than make up for it, and I can’t wait for my chance to prove this fact
Oops, meant to type “do”
Anyways, I remember hearing about a FPS on dreamcast which pitted M&Kb users against gamepad users. It was a slaughter…
Granted they may not have had auto aim, but that’s an unfair advantage. If you’re gonna compare them, compare them both on an even playing field…
Besides, son it won’t matter once BODIELOBUS starts selling the REFLEX Control game pad
Never doubted it. I always thought a controller was better than a point ‘n’ click system. It seems controllers are just too hard for some people to ‘grasp’. As for any assisted aiming, I think there are a lot of PC users who will shout how much better a mouse & keyboard are over a controller and they don’t even realise they use assisted aiming in their games.
There is no “assisted” aiming in the vast majority of PC games. You obviously don’t play PC games if you don’t know that, and I’m itching for the chance to mop the floor with you Gamepaders.
“Also, most controller games have a passive “aiming helper” that unwittingly guide the crosshairs towards your enemy. Little known fact, even Halo has it. ”
rofl, little known fact?? Unless you’re referring to the casual gamer, this is a WELL known fact.
As far as these results, I could see them being true to a point. Not all games will return the same results. I want to see someone play counter-strike and dominate using a controller. But other games, maybe like this one, where precision isn’t as important it may be ok

a game like devil may cry, which requires fast button presses, or ninja gaiden, will be better with a controller.
A shooter however, without auto aim, can never be more accurate or faster to control than a mouse+keyboard.
I halo didn’t have auto aim, you’d all suck at it.
But, for people who cannot live without mouse+keyboard shooters, other consoles are confirmed to have mouse+keyboard support so there you go

Of course you’ll have the console players able to take on PC users when you use cheap auto-aim features.
On PC any kind of auto aim actually hinders players rather than help them since they can aim accurately and fast on their own. Auto aiming will not be so accurate (it’s not an aimbot, heh) or as fast to keep the game “balanced”.
That’s the only reason gamepad users could take on mouse and keyboard users in this game. Simply because the developers coded the gameplay specifically to hinder the advantages of the default PC controller set up.
Not the best kind of game design if you ask me…
Thank you assholes,
You truly ruined Shadowrun by turning it into a damn FPS. How many more do we need? The 16bit game was one of the best. All you had to do was use that game as the model and everything else would fall into place. Good luck selling your crappy game and I hope the game epiclly fails.

this is a load of bs, im sorry but a gamepad will never be able to beat a m+kb simply becuz aiming and moving at the same time is to hard to do on a gamepad with the accuracy like on on kb+mouse trying to search a balance with auto-aim and such is useless its a mission impossible console just keep making those 3rd person shooters and ur fine, leave the FPS to the pc gamers, i could go on for an hour and tell u how often ive seen gamepads get owned by kb+m users, but its just not worth talking anymore coz this discussion is simply useless, conclusion is, gamepads are nice for race-games and sidescrollers and all that. and pc is for FPS and that will never change unless they comeup with a completely new system to play FPS with, but it wont be a regular xbox gamepad NEVER so gl hf gg etc irc ? ;D l8a!
what a bullshit yeah… nothing beats keyboard.
A lot of games now are more about movement. While they still rely a heavy amount on shooting, console-made games also attribute to quick-feet. Shadowrun seems like an extremely fast-paced game and granted Fatil1ty wasn’t there testing it out, I have no doubt that this is to foreshadow what will happen.
I think you have a very valid point there. While a mouse may be better suited to aiming, the 360-degree full freedom stick for movement allows better survival than classic ASWD.
A quote from 7yearexperiencedgamer “a gamepad will never be able to beat a m+kb simply becuz aiming and moving at the same time is to hard to do on a gamepad…” Maybe your just no good with a gamepad your self? I shoot and move on a gamepad easily.
Definitely keyboard and mouse are much better than the the controller in shooting games…because it is like you holding a gun which is the mouse and moving player with the keyboard..it is so accurate and fast….
